The Red House
Aldeburgh Primary School and The Red House
Over the past three years, Aldeburgh Primary School has developed a great working partnership with The Red House. The Red House is part of the Britten Pears Foundation and promotes the creative arts in schools. During this time, the Arts co-ordinator, has been working in collaboration with Joe Carr (education officer for Britten Pears) to develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of the arts and to give them the opportunity to explore the arts in depth. As part of this, some of the children have taken part in the Arts Award scheme, starting with Discover, followed by Explore. In 2020 some of the year 6 children decided they wanted to go further and work for their Bronze Arts Award. This is normally undertaken by secondary school pupils – we are so proud of their commitment and dedication, and of the extremely high levels of work. We await to hear the result.
Along with the Arts Award, classes throughout the school have been able to access the various resources at The Red House. They have visited the museum and found out about Benjamin Britten’s music and the processes involved in producing an opera, producing an ‘Opera in a Day’. The archive, containing many original art works, has also been explored. Joe has brought professional artists into school to work with the children, as well as giving them the opportunity to interact with professional musicians and create their own compositions.
Two years ago The Red House were able to obtain, for the school, funding for three years, to allow the school to invest in resources for all the children to benefit from and enjoy, and to continue our goal of opening children’s eyes to the world of the creative arts.
